Officially stress hasn't been identified as a cause of heartburn, but many sufferers believe that their hectic, stressful lifestyles do make their condition worse. Actually, it's more likely that stress causes changes in our usual behaviors which can bring on heartburn. For example, at times when life is very hectic, we may eat too much fast food or even miss meals altogether. It is fully documented that eating right, exercising, and getting plenty of sleep are necessary for wellness. Failure to meet these basic needs, especially over a period of time, can cause stress which causes heartburn.

Knowing this information about the causes of heartburn can help you get the situation under control. Some of the steps you can take to alleviate this health issue include:
* Eating a good variety of fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and fresh fish can give your brain the nutrients it needs in order to deal with stressful situations.
* Avoiding foods that you have already determined to bring on bouts of heartburn, including items like sugar, caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol.
* Sleeping between 7 and 8 hours every night. If you deprive yourself of the sleep you need, your stress level can become elevated.
* Getting plenty of regular exercise. This doesn't mean that you have to go out and run five miles every day; however, you do need to get up out of that chair and get moving. Exercise will lower your stress level, aid in digestion, and help your body produce hormones that give you a more positive mindset.
* Allowing yourself periodic mental breaks. Imagine yourself in a happy place, and spend a few moments concentrating on the things you see, hear, smell, taste, and feel in that place. Even just a short break will help your relax.
* Talking to your doctor to determine if one of the medications you are taking could be causing the problem. It should be a simple matter for him to switch you to something that won't affect you as negatively.

Some ways to alleviate your stress while at work include taking time for a well-balanced lunch, eliminating trigger foods from your diet, taking a short walk during your break or lunch hour, and giving yourself chances to unwind during your shift.
