The number of people who can speak English, or expatriates in Taiwan or China, who can also fluently speak in Chinese is slowly growing each day. The few who can't communicate as effectively or have zero knowledge of Chinese now expressly state their eagerness to learn the language.

Though most five-star hotels and international airports have English-speaking employees and signage everywhere, still, the need to communicate in Chinese could really come in handy. After all, you can't stay at the airport forever. What if you go to the local market where nobody knows how to speak English?

It is advantageous for a foreigner who is visiting China or any other Chinese-speaking nation to learn the language so that he can buy his own train ticket, ride a bus, buy his own meals, and not just fully depend on an interpreter to take him to his destination.

There are several simple ways that one can learn Chinese. Here are various approaches that you might want to try:

Primarily, you must choose a Chinese program to suit your learning style

Find out which form of media you'd best learn in. Do you learn well when you listen to your lessons? Then it would be best to find an audio course that would guide you through the Chinese rules of grammar and sentence construction.

If you are a visual person, then you can always read eBooks in order to learn Chinese. You could also watch Chinese shows on the television.

Constantly surround yourself with the new vocabulary that you learned

If you have to write tiny notes and post them on the bathroom mirror or on your bedposts just so you could remember those vocabularies that you recently encountered, then you might as well get on with it.

Make use of every opportunity to commit to memory all of the things that you have learned during your Chinese class; studies have proven that those who write down things are better able to remember them than those who don't.

Talk to Chinese locals

If you ever visit a local store and you happen to find some Chinese locals there, then don't be afraid to approach them to speak with them. Tell them about your goal of learning Chinese and they'll surely be amazed that you would go out of your way to communicate with them.

Leaving your English-speaking environment should give you the chance to put yourself to the test. Get out of your comfort zone by talking in straight Chinese.
