White or Wheat? It really is an important decision It seems like an unimportant question.
Do you really know what white foods are doing to you?If you have any health issues or weight issues, making the change to wheat can make a big difference.
Some of these foods may not be easy to give up, but knowing what to try to stay away from can help you make better choices most of the time.
By white foods, I mean anything made with white flour, white rice, white bread, and white pastas.
Substitute with whole wheat flours, breads, pastas, and brown or wild rice.
(This does not include potatoes, just be sure to eat the skins).
The reason is simple.
Foods made with white flour have been bleached and stripped of their nutrients.
Then they may add in a few token vitamins and call it "enriched".
White rice is basically the same.
In the processing of the white rice, all the fiber and many nutrients are removed, leaving mostly carbohydrates.
Sticking with wheat flour, brown rice, or better, wild rice is a much healthier alternative.
White foods have been stripped of their fiber, causing metabolism and digestion to slow.
When your digestion slows, your body cannot assimilate the nutrients in the food.
This improperly digested food creates toxins in your body, causing weight gain and other digestive disorders.
Most people experience occasional digestive problems such as gas, indigestion, upset stomach, constipation or diarrhea.
Sometimes we dismiss these symptoms as merely bothersome, or worse, take something to cover them up.
We may need to pay more attention to these signals from our bodies.
Imagine a pipe in your sink that has a build up of gunk stuck to the sides of it.
Eventually that pipe would stop up and cause a bigger problem.
Now imagine that build up is in your intestines.
This toxic build up can cause serious health problems.
If you experience any digestive problems, protruding belly, skin problems, allergies, or lack of energy, you may to pay attention to your digestion.
The best ways to improve digestion are by drinking lots of water and getting enough fiber.
Trying to get enough fiber in our "American" diets is difficult enough, why would we want to eat foods that have the fiber stripped out in the processing? It does make a difference when you choose white or wheat.
It could mean the difference between sickness and health for you.
Trying to stay away from white or enriched flour may be tough at first.
You will have to pass on the muffins your co-worker brings in and the bread and tortillas at lunch, but the good news is you can make any of the bad "white" foods yourself using whole wheat flour.
No time for baking?Go to your local health food store and get all those tasty treats in a much healthier package.
