A garage can be an ideal place for a home workshop, providing shelter and ample space to perform a variety of household tasks and hobbies. However, setting up a garage workshop can be expensive and time-consuming. Knowing what tools to include in your workshop is the first step to having a great place to work. - Hand tools serve a wide variety of purposes and form the center of any home workshop. A garage workshop, with adequate storage space, should be able to accommodate a large set of hand tools. This includes hammers and mallets, screwdrivers, pliers, a hand drill, a socket set (English and/or metric), hand saws, paint, primer, sandpaper, steel wool, brushes, a vice, a miter box and a set of wrenches.
- Power tools are another major category for a garage, where electrical outlets can make it easy to use the best tool for every job. Electric drills, screwdrivers and saws allow for more precise work with less effort. If there's space for a woodshop in the garage, a table saw, bandsaw and coping saw will come in handy.
- A garage workshop is a good place for an air compressor to power a set of air tools. This includes items for working on a car, such as an impact wrench, along with air-powered nail guns and spray guns for painting.
- Because the garage may also be home to your vehicle, it's a good place to keep automotive tools. This can include items needed for basic maintenance like an oil filter wrench, special brake tools and a torque wrench. A jack or jack stands, along with an engine hoist, will be useful for more complicated repair projects.
- Because any workshop eventually gets dirty, a garage workshop needs a supply of cleaning tools. A wet-dry shop vac is a good place to start, as it can take care of most messes including water, oil and sawdust. Brooms and mops are best for larger messes and don't forget to include a dust pan and garbage bags. Always keep a supply of newspapers and rags nearby to clean up spills. Mineral spirits and rubbing alcohol are useful for removing paint and ink when spills do occur. Finally, if your garage has a sink, keep a heavy-duty soap compound nearby for washing up.
