Home Security and the College Student
What about now that your first little one is all grown up and ready to fly the coop? Will they be safe in their new college environment? These are questions that every parent has to reflect upon and answer at some point, but yet the answer is so simple.
If a home alarm system is their go-to choice for at-home safety issues, why should it be any less so for a university-bound senior? The latest array of technological advancements in issues of home safety provides something for everyone, regardless of their living arrangement.
Some colleges require first- and second-year students to live on campus in a dorm; although these particular accommodations facilitate easy friend-making, they are not always that conducive to personal safety.
University-aged kids often forget to lock their doors, and are not known to be particularly careful about making sure they don't allow anyone besides themselves to enter the building behind them.
In such a big setting, they do not always know one another, which can also make it easy for someone to get in.
Now, you can arm your teenager with one of several personal safety-device options.
These discreet aids can fit easily inside a bag or backpack, to be kept at the ready in the event of an attack.
Several popular options are available, including pepper spray and a loud horn.
Designed to temporarily disable the attacker, both of these items give the user ample time to get away, while also attracting attention from police and other helpers who may be standing by.
Usually in these cases, the attacker gets scared off and leaves the person alone.
Pepper spray is an extremely concentrated solution which has properties which irritate the eyes, nose, and mouth of the attacker.
It is sprayed from a distance of up to 25 feet away into the target's face.
Then, it temporarily blinds him or her until the would-be victim can make their escape.
Another excellent option is a foghorn-like device which startles the attacker with its extremely piercing noise.
This also attracts a lot of attention from passers-by, who can then be alerted to call the police.
If your college student is planning to live off-campus in a house with friends, as many upperclassmen choose to do, there are other safety options well-suited to this scenario.
In addition to the above-mentioned personal safety devices, a home alarm system is a good choice of investment.
The systems are becoming increasingly affordable, especially with the input of a couple of other sets of parents.
The low fee includes a personalized assessment and installation of a number of different home safety features, most specifically, the motion detector.
Motion detecting devices work in one of two ways (or, as is the case with many top-of-the-line models today, a combination of both).
The first way is called the microwave sensor, which utilizes reflected microwaves to distinguish differences in frequency between harmless background objects, and a potentially threatening one.
The second way, called infrared light technology, uses readings of the invisible light given off by heat-producing objects to decipher whether or not one object is a potential menace.
Considering the installation of a home security system in the apartment or house of one's college student is an excellent and wise choice.
While it is important to have fun in college, parents know that safety comes first.
