There are many occasions when a gift for the home can be more appropriate than an individual gift--including a thank you for a being a weekend guest, anniversaries, weddings, and the holidays. When selecting a present for someone's home, you don't have to worry about whether it will fit. Hand towels, for example, are basically the same size no matter where you buy them. But do consider the people and their tastes when making your choice. - If your gift recipients love ice cream, put together the makings of an ice cream parlor as a fun housewarming or holiday gift. Package an electric ice cream maker with sundae dishes, long spoons, tall soda glasses and a package of drinking straws. Add a selection of ice cream toppings. Be sure to include an apron and if you can, find a soda jerk hat. Top off the gift with an ice cream recipe book and a gift certificate from a grocery store to purchase ingredients for the ice cream. If your budget will manage it, throw in a bistro set of table and chairs like those found in old-fashioned ice cream parlors.
- Not much is more romantic then snuggling around a roaring fire. If newlyweds or an anniversary couple are on your gift list, give them a fire pit with a bag of wood and some kindling. Add a blanket to cuddle under, a flashlight and a book of ghost stories. And in case all the cuddling builds up their appetite ... for food, include a package of graham crackers, a bag of marshmallows and box of chocolate bars to make that campfire favorite, s'mores.
- Get your favorite family on their feet and out in the fresh air with a set of outdoor games. Video interaction games are fun, but not as exciting as the real thing. Badminton doesn't take a lot of skill and is good exercise. The equipment needed is simply a net, racquets and a couple of birdies. Close doesn't count for much in most games, but it does with horseshoes. Croquet is can be played by kids and grownups. Round out your game gift set with lawn bowling equipment.
- A night at the movie is a relaxing but can get pricey. For nearly the same price put together a movie gift package. Start with a hot air popcorn popper. Add popcorn, of course, and create some bottles of gourmet spices. Mix dried parsley, garlic and onion salt, oregano and Parmesan cheese for a taste of Italy. Try cumin, salt, dried cilantro and hot pepper flakes for a touch of Mexico. For those with a sweet tooth, combine brown sugar, mini chocolate chips and honey-glazed peanuts. Label each mix and store in clear glass jars. Add bowls and a couple classic movies to complete the mix.
