How to Register a Handyman Business in New Jersey
- 1). Register for a trade name for your handyman business. A trade name is the name you use when conducting business and filing taxes. Because your business is a sole proprietorship, you will register your trade name at your local county clerk's office. You will be required to provide your name, address, business name and contact information. The application for a trade name costs a small fee.
- 2). Contact the New Jersey Department of the Treasury to register your handyman business for state taxes. You must charge a state sales tax for all handyman services rendered. To register your business, go to the Department of the Treasury's website and fill out an online application, or have a packet mailed to you. Once registered, you must file quarterly documents with the state regarding your revenue. At the end of every quarter, you will pay state taxes on revenue from your handyman business.
- 3). Obtain a business registration certificate from New Jersey's Department of the Treasury to comply with state laws regarding contract work. According to Chapter 85, P.L. 2006 of the New Jersey legal code, you cannot perform work for the government or anyone else without a certificate that licenses your company in the state. Contact the Department of the Treasury online, in person or by phone to receive your registration packet. Fill out the forms and return them to the Treasury Department with the required administration fee.
