How to Install Kitchen Cabinet & New Hardware
- 1). Draw an outline of the cabinets on the floor. The front of the cabinets should be 22 inches from the wall all the way around the kitchen. Find the wall studs with a stud finder. Make a mark at each stud on the drywall with a pencil.
- 2). Place the base cabinets. Set a level on top of each section of cabinets. Place shims under the bottom of the base cabinets until they are level. Place more shims as necessary to make the tops of each cabinet level with each other.
- 3). Drive screws through the cabinet frames from inside the cabinet to attach the sections of the base cabinets to one another. Secure the cabinets to the walls by driving a screw through the back of the cabinet into each wall stud.
- 4). Measure up from the top of the base cabinet 19 and 1/2 inches. Draw a line all the way around the kitchen where the upper cabinets will be installed. The line indicates the bottom of the upper cabinets.
- 5). Cut the 2 by 4s to match the width of each section of upper cabinet. Nail the 2 by 4s onto the wall, using the line to mark the top of the 2 by 4 . These boards will help support the weight of the cabinets during installation.
- 6). Raise a section of upper cabinet and place it on the wall. Support the top with your hand. Rest the back bottom edge of the cabinet on the 2 by 4.
- 7). Open the cabinet doors and drive screws through the back of the cabinet frames into a wall stud. Secure the cabinet to the wall at both the top and the bottom by driving a screw into every stud. Take down the ledger board. Repeat this process for every section of upper cabinet.
- 8). Place a piece of low tack painter's tape over the area where you will place the door hardware. Mark the location for the hardware. Drill a hole through the inside of the door, through the front of the door. Use a drill bit that corresponds to the size of the screws you will be using for the hardware. Insert a screw through the hole. Screw the hardware into place on the door.
- 9). Open the drawers. Place tape over the area where the hardware will be installed. Drill a hole through the inside of the cabinet door, through the drawer box and the drawer front. Insert a screw through the hole and screw the hardware to the drawer.
