How to Insulate an Outside Basement Wall Yourself

    • 1). Measure a stud in the wall frame from top to bottom. Lock your tape measure at that measurement.

    • 2). Stretch out your tape measure on the floor. Roll out a length of insulation next to it. Flip it over so the foil side of the insulation faces up.

    • 3). Lay your square over the width of the insulation at the measurement. Run the razor knife over the surface to cut it.

    • 4). Press the cut insulation piece into the space between the first two studs with the foil side facing out into the room.

    • 5). Secure the piece with staples, shooting them through the foil at the sides of the insulation into the studs. Shoot the staples every foot down both sides of the piece.

    • 6). Repeat for each pair of studs on the basement wall. Cut the insulation away around any electrical boxes or other obstruction. Install drywall or paneling onto the studs, over the insulation.
