How do I Choose Area Carpets?
- 1). Choose the size of the area rug that you'll need for the room you are decorating. If furniture will be sitting on the rug, it should extend at least 1 foot past the edge of the furniture. If furniture will not be sitting on the rug, choose a size that ends approximately 2 feet from any walls that it's near.
- 2). Choose the shape of the rug. The shape should complement the lines of the walls, the décor and the furniture of the room. For example, if you have a rounded couch that will be placed on the rug, choose a round rug. This helps tie the room together and makes the lines of the room flow for an aesthetically pleasing design.
- 3). Choose the underlying color of the rug. The color of the rug should match or complement the color of the room's décor and walls. For example, if the room has tan walls with red décor, consider a rug with an underlying tan color and inlaid red designs. Do not choose a rug of a color that is not represented anywhere else in the room; this makes the rug feel out of place and clash with the room's design.
- 4). Write all of your decisions down on paper and locate two or three local carpet and rug stores. Tell them what you are looking for and consider what they have to offer. It is a good idea to look at several options before making a final decision.
