Tile Installation Guidelines
- 1). Measure the room's length and width to get the total surface area to be covered. Use this to buy the right quantity of tiles. Get some extra pieces if you plan to cut the tiles.
- 2). Choose tiles that will suit your décor and your design. Use glazed ceramic tiles for indoors and unglazed types outdoors. Match grout colors to bring out the colors of floor tiles. Note that dirt is not so noticeable on darker color grouts.
- 3). Assemble the correct tools for the job such as tile cutter, toothed trowel, float and a rubber mallet, to help insure a successful installation. Buy the right thin-set mortar for the type of sub-floor where tile is to be installed. Check the package for this information.
- 4). Clean and prep the surface to be tiled. Chisel out old grout, mortar and flooring materials such as vinyl or linoleum before starting. Wash the surface thoroughly; use bleach to remove mold. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly.
- 5). Lay out tiles across the floor or next to a wall get an idea of what they'll look like once installed. Remove the tiles. Measure and mark a center chalk line to start the first row of tiles. Measure and mark a second center line perpendicular to the first. Use these as the starting points for installing the tiles in all directions in the room.
- 6). Use a appropriate size toothed trowel to apply the thin-set mortar in sweeping half-moon turns. Work with speed and diligence when setting down tiles once you start applying the thin-set, as it starts to dry rather quickly, depending on humidity. Lay the tiles according to the layout plan. Lightly tap each tile with a rubber mallet to secure into place. Before the mortar dries, you can adjust tiles that aren't positioned correctly. Allow the mortar to dry thoroughly.
- 7). Apply grout liberally into the gaps between the tiles, using a rubber-edged float. Spread the grout evenly and flush or slightly below the tile surface. Remove grout film from the tile using a damp lint-free cloth. Allow the grout to dry thoroughly according to package directions. When the grout has thoroughly cured, apply grout sealer.
