How to Make an Old Wood Storm Window
- 1). Determine the number of windows for which you will be making a storm window. Measure each of these windows using the inside dimensions of the window casing as your guideline.
- 2). Order your acrylic sheets or purchase them directly from your local home improvement store. These sheets come in a clear, colored or frosted finish. They are transparent, shatter-resistant and often substituted for glass. They are sold under several different names including Plexiglas, Lucite and Perspex.
- 3). Make a frame for each window using old wood remnants you already have, or purchase new wood. Put the frame together using a common butt joint. Simply nail or screw the end of one piece of wood to the end of a second piece to form a corner. Attach L brackets at the corners of the frame for additional strength. If you are not sure how to use the L brackets, inquire at the home improvement store where you purchase them. The frame should fit just inside the window casings. These windows give a dead air space between the window and your innovative new storm window.
- 4). Measure and cut the acrylic sheets to fit each frame. Drill small holes around the edges of the acrylic sheets to avoid cracking them while inserting the screws. Secure the acrylic glass sheets to the frames using metal screws with a rubber washer and a metal washer on top.
- 5). Attach storm window clips on the outside edge of the casing to hold the frames in place. These are an inexpensive, simple way to protect your storm windows from high winds.
- 6). Apply primer paint to the frames. This seals the wood and prepares the surface for the finish coat of paint. Paint your frames.
