How to Add Bifold Doors When Building an Interior Wall

    • 1). Frame the opening to accommodate the width of the bifold doors. Allow adequate space for drywall and other wall coverings. Use the level and carpenter's square to ensure that the opening is plumb, square and level. Compare the bifold door manufacturer's requirements to the size of your opening.

    • 2). Install the bifold door track. The track must be centered in the opening. If you are using the wall as a frame of reference for centering the track, ensure that the wall is plumb. If the top pivot brackets are not already inside the track, place them in the track before installation. Hold the track in place and fasten to framing members or the jamb. Use wood shims to level the track, if necessary.

    • 3). Install the bottom pivot brackets. The L-shaped brackets that hold the door at its bottom corners must be centered in the opening. Bottom bifold door brackets feature an ovular screw hole that allows adjustment of the bracket's position. Fasten the bracket to the wall through the ovular hole. After making adjustments, fasten the bottom bracket to the wall and floor through the regular screw holes. Use wood shims to level the brackets, if necessary.

    • 4). Hang the bifold doors. Assemble the panels if applicable. Push one door's top pivot pins fully into their corresponding top brackets: one into the stationary pivot bracket and the other into the sliding bracket. While the top pin is fully inserted, guide the bottom pin into place in the bottom bracket. Repeat for the other door.

    • 5). Adjust the position of the doors. Both the top and bottom pivot brackets are adjustable. Lift the door upward to shift the bottom pin from side to side and loosen the top bracket's set screw to allow the top pin to move from side to side.
