How to Make Wooden Wall Shelves
- 1). Cut the lumber sheet into a rectangle measuring 42 by 10 inches for the wall mounted back of the shelf. Cut a shelf top from the lumber sheet measuring 36 by 10 inches and cut two right-angled triangles for the shelf brackets measuring 9 and 6 inches along the right sides, and around 10.8 inches along the hypotenuse. Cut a cleat from the 2-by-1 lumber of 32.5 inches.
- 2). Draw a line 2 inches down from the 42 inch side of the wall mount, along its length. Position the cleat on the underside of the line, centered; there will be a little more than 2 inches of space on either side of the cleat ends. Glue in place.
- 3). Position the two brackets on either side of the cleat with the 6-inch side on the wall mount, and the 9-inch side stick out at a right angle to the wall mount; the top of the cleat should be flush with the brackets. Glue in place.
- 4). Screw the cleat in place through the front of the cleat into the wall mount underneath using 1 ¾-inch screws -- five screws evenly spaced along the cleat will suffice. Screw the brackets in place through the back of the wall mount into the 6-inch side of the bracket -- three screws per bracket.
- 5). Position the shelf top centered over the cleat and brackets -- there will be an overhang on each end of around 2 inches. Screw the shelf top into the cleat and the 9-inch side of the brackets.
- 6). Scrape wood putty into any visible screw holes with the putty knife and let dry. Sand the whole shelf with sandpaper or a sander, then paint or varnish as desired. Attach to the wall by screwing through the wall mount into the wall with 3-inch screws. Position the screws under the shelf top so they are hidden from view -- touch up with putty and paint/varnish to finish the wooden wall shelves.
