Nanded is a religious and historically significant centre, located in the Marathwada division of south eastern Maharashtra. Covering an area of 142 square kilometers its borders brush those of Andhra Pradesh. Nanded is famous for its Sikh gurudwaras, Sufi shrines and Hindu temples. It houses over 630,000 people of various communities like Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains. Marathi is the main language used, followed by Punjabi and Hindi. There are many Kannada and Telugu speakers as well.

The name Nanded is believed to have taken origin from "Nandi", vehicle of Lord Shiva. According to mythology, Shiva had performed penance on the bank (tat) of river Godavari and consequently, "Nandi Tat" became Nanded.

Today, it gains prominence from the Hazoor Sahib Gurudwara, a historical landmark of the city. It is erected at the site where the last Sikh guru, Shri Guru Gobind singhji Maharaj took his last breath. In Sikhism, this sacred location is considered to be one of the five "takhts" i.e. thrones of temporal authority. When translated, Hazoor Sahib means "presence of the master". It is one of the most important pilgrimage centres for Sikhs. Many other ancient gurdwaras have becomes historical sites and tourist attractions. In addition to these, three gurdwaras have been constructed in recent times - Langar Saheb, Nanak Sar, and the Ratangarh.

The holy place of worship for Hindus is at the Renukadevi Shaktipeetha temple at Mahur, around 125 kilometers from Nanded. the Siddeshwara Temple and Shri Kshetra Mahurgad are other pilgrim centres for Hindus. The Masjid of Biloli, also known as Hazrat Nawab Sarfaraz Khan Sahid Masjid, was built 330 years ago and is a prominent place of Islam worship.

Some other places of attraction include the Treasure Bazaar, Basari Temple and Narsi Namdev. Commercial tourist spots like Kandhar Fort, Unkeshwar, Nanded Fort and Kandhar Falls find crowds from different destinations. The Kandhar Fort is encircled by a moat, initially built for the purpose of security. It is famous for its architecture and its historicity. The Nanded Fort is around 4.5 kilometers from the Nanded Railway Station and is bordered by the Godavari river. Sprawling gardens with trees and plants surround the fort.

Nanded experiences hot summers with soaring temperatures of 42 degrees in April and May. September to February is much milder with cool and dry winters. It is probably the best time to visit Nanded. It receives heavy showers from June to September making it difficult to commute. Cheap and fast Nanded flights are available from Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai and other places of India.
