How to Make Finch Food
- 1). Dice up a variety of vegetables into tiny squares and place them in a shallow feeding bowl inside the finch cage. According to the Finch Information Center, the following vegetables are safe for finches to eat: broccoli stems, brussels sprouts, cooked peas, turnip greens, romaine lettuce, beets, yams, pumpkins, dandelions, celery leaves, parsley and endive.
- 2). Mix any of the following chopped fruit into the vegetable mixture: apricots, citrus fruits and bananas. You can also place a small bowl of applesauce into the finch cage to see if the bird will eat it.
- 3). Feed the bird sources of protein, which can be found in the following products: canned tuna, grated cheese and dry cat or dog food. This is especially important for finches that are nesting or breeding.
- 4). Create an egg mix to feed to the finch at least three times per week. Boil one egg in a pot of water. When the egg cools, crush the egg and the eggshell into small pieces. Mix in 1-1/2 tsp. hulled, unsalted sunflower seeds. This mixture provides the calcium the finch needs.
