How to Improve Drainage Near Downspouts

    • 1). Mark the path of the drainage trench by spraying the ground with spray paint. Run the trench to a low point away from your home.

    • 2). Dig a trench along the line you marked with the spray paint. Dig the trench 10 inches deep and 6 inches wide, sloping the trench away from the house 1/8 inch for every foot.

    • 3). Excavate a hole 18 inches deep and 3 feet wide at the end of the trench.

    • 4). Place gravel or large, flat stones into the hole at the end of the trench.

    • 5). Lay out all the pipes and pipe fittings next to the trench.

    • 6). Insert a downspout adapter into a 3-inch by 4-inch reducer coupling, then attach the reducer coupling to the end of the downspout.

    • 7). Place a 90-degree PVC elbow into the trench below the reducer coupling. Cut a length of PVC pipe to fit the distance between the elbow and the reducer coupling.

    • 8). Cover the surfaces of the PVC pipe and elbow where the pieces connect with PVC primer, and allow it to dry.

    • 9). Cover the surfaces of the PVC pipe and elbow where the pieces connect with PVC cement. Fit the pieces together and hold them for 30 seconds while the cement cures.

    • 10

Slide the downspout adapter onto the pipe you cemented to the elbow (but don't glue it).

    • 11

Place an elbow joint in the trench at each bend. Measure and cut PVC pipes to fit between the elbows.

    • 12

Cover the sections of PVC pipe and elbow joints that connect with PVC primer and allow it to dry.

    • 13

Apply PVC cement to the elbow joint at the bottom of the downspout and the first length of pipe and fit them together, holding them for 30 seconds while the cement cures.

    • 14

Continue assembling the drain pipe inside the trench until you reach the hole at the end of the trench, using the same method. Connect different lengths of pipe with standard PVC couplings.

    • 15

Place rocks or gravel over the end of the pipe in the hole. Backfill the trench.
