Ideas to Help When Dusting the House

    Use Proper Tools

    • While the feather duster is fun to look at and sweep around dramatically, it is not your dusting ally. Use the boring yet efficient piece of cotton cloth. Many people use old socks or washcloths to save money on dust cloths. Make sure the cloth is clean and pair it with a dusting spray or furniture polish. Use an allergen-specific spray if you have issues with pet dander or pollen.

    Clean Your Filters

    • Shorten your dusting time by making sure that your home's filters aren't working against you. Clean your air-conditioner/heater filter on a regular basis. Some people use washable filters, while others buy disposable ones. Whatever type of filter you use, change it or clean it as often as every month if you need to. Empty your vacuum cleaner bags and change them out regularly as well. When your filters are filthy, they are only adding to the dust accumulation.

    Follow Cleaning Protocol

    • No matter what you've been told, there are cleaning protocols that must be followed, and your dusting timing is very important. Complete several other chores before getting out that dust cloth. They can include cleaning up all the clutter, fluffing the throw pillows, turning over the sofa cushions and making the bed. Do all of these chores before you dust, because they tend to only stir up dust. Wait to vacuum until after you've dusted. The vacuum cleaner works to clean up all the dust that landed on the floor

    Non-Furniture Dusting

    • Dusting spray and polish aren't meant for every dusty item. For example, your brand new high-definition, flat-screen television and surround-sound system probably have dust on them, but use separate dust cloths or specialized electronic microfiber cloths for them without any type of cleaning spray. When you need to dust the top of your ceiling fan blades, use a wet paper towel to clean off the layer of dust before you use a cloth and polish. According to "Good Housekeeping," you can use tiny makeup brushes to dust off fragile curios or other decorative items.
