Teaching your puppy to go outside whenever they need to "go" is the most important thing you will ever do when it comes to training your dog.
Keeping the following 3 key tips in mind ensures you will be able to successfully train your new little friend.
Patience is a virtue You need to keep in mind, when potty training your puppy, that your puppy is a baby who has a small bladder and bowel and very little control.
You want to establish a relationship of trust and affection with your puppy, and if you lose your temper and scream (or worse, hit your puppy) every time he has an accident then your puppy will fear you rather than bond with you.
Your puppy wants to please you and responds better to positive reinforcement.
It is best to clean up accidents without drawing any attention to it.
Clean it quickly and quietly and give no attention at all.
And when your puppy does go in the proper spot outside, then turn on the affection giving your puppy loads of praise and attention.
Be consistent Your puppy will learn where he should be pooing and peeing if you are consistent about taking him out.
Your puppy will have to "go" a lot when he is young.
An eight week puppy will have to "go" every 1 to 2 hours (night and day) so it is good to free your schedule those first few weeks (and expect some sleepless nights) when you first bring your puppy home.
When it is time to take your puppy outside put him on a leash and walk outside using the same door and the same path.
Then walk to the spot in your yard that you would like your dog to use regularly.
Do not talk to your puppy just stand in the spot.
If he manages to "go" then say, "get busy" while he is "going".
(Eventually your dog will learn to go on command if you consistently say the command when he first starts "going".
) Remember to give your puppy tons of praise when he does "go".
Repeat this whole routine every few hours and before you know it your puppy will be going to that same door asking to be let out.
He will then go to the spot you picked out and do his business! Look for signs As your puppy is potty training you need to keep a vigilant eye on him.
Although you do not want to scold him if he has had an accident, you want to prevent as many as possible, so as not to establish bad habits.
If your puppy starts sniffing around anxiously make sure you reach for the leash and get him outside quickly.
