Is Your Horse Ready For Winter?

Is your horse ready for winter? Yes, probably more than you think.
As humans, we always want to give are beloved animals what we have.
For instance, I want a nice warm house with a fireplace and cozy blankets in the winter, why wouldn't my horse? The truth is, our horses are already prepared for winter and rarely need our help.
I grew up in Colorado and our horses were never pampered but, they never got sick either.
Now I live in Central Texas and I see more blankets on horses than I ever imagined in Colorado.
The truth is, horses begin to grow their coats when the days get shorter.
This is to prepare them for the colder weather coming and when it does, your horse will suddenly seem fluffier.
This fuller coat acts as insulation.
The hairs lift up to trap warm air against the skin.
The climate you are in, and even how your horses hair grows, will determine the thickness of your horse's coat.
For example, I have one horse that will get a very thick coat before winter sets in and an other horse who keeps a short coat all winter long.
Here are some things you can do for your horses in the winter months.
1.
Don't clip them in the winter.
2.
Make sure they have plenty of hay available, as this is a natural heating resulting from fermentation.
3.
Make sure your horses have plenty of drinkable water, snow and ice don't count.
4.
Turn your horses out daily, if possible, so they get use to the elements, get plenty of exercise, and fresh air.
5.
Make sure your horses have shelter.
These could be sheds or open stalls they can get underneath.
6.
On those icy or rainy days, use a light waterproof blanket on horse that need it.
7.
If you have an older horse, or have horses who are shivering, you should consider using a blanket.
