SEO professionals are boldly declaring 2011 to be the year of mobile marketing.
Noted in a December 2010 Economist article, Google referenced development efforts will be focused on the creation and use of mobile applications.
Search engine optimization experts will see a change in the way Google enhances their search algorithms this year.
This is a change from 12 months ago when Google made three changes to their algorithm to reflect attention to video and ease consumer search.
With the acquisition of YouTube, Google focused a large amount of resources and attention on video technology acquisitions.
They were responding to the increased usage of both mobile smart phones, and the consumption of video on mobile phones.
As a result, Google gave higher search value consideration to websites that included video in their content.
This year, after owning the video space and helping make it a force to reckon with, the search giant has set its sights on mobile as an extension of video consumption.
It is a natural outgrowth for Google, with an obvious strategy to dominate mobile search.
According to several different studies, mobile web traffic grew approximately 110% in North America in 2010, and the number of web pages viewed via mobile phones is expected to rise to 2.
3% in 2011.
This number is expected to grow during the year, especially on the heels of Verizon's iPhone launch in January, and the continued growth of the Android operating system.
According to NeilsonWire, Google's Android operating system is now being sold on more phones than the iPhone or Blackberry, and already has 24% of the market share, compared to Apple's 25%.
Android threatens to eclipse Apple's market share in 2011.
Google made significant changes to its search algorithm to enable mobile to be incorporated into Google SEO.
For example: • Google AdWords will now include local search results in the keyword listings.
Any search marketers looking for ideal keywords for their Google SEO efforts can now see what keywords are commonly found via mobile search.
• Google is incorporating voice search into their Google Maps, which draws results from their Google Local listings.
This especially helps restaurants and retail stores that want to incorporate Google SEO as part of their mobile marketing.
• The Android uses Google apps as part of their operating system, not an add-on.
And as the Android OS grows, more users will automatically turn to Google for their mobile search, which means the Google search market will grow as well.
Users do not want to pinch and swipe their way around a website that is normally only visible on their desktop.
They need a mobile website that avoids using Flash and Java.
They need information, no fancy graphics.
Mobile marketers who avoid Flash and Java, and focus on basic Google SEO tactics are going to do well.
Developers are also beginning to work with HTML5 as a programming alternative to Flash and Java.
Brands should be able to take advantage of this new language, and create mobile-ready websites that harness this new technology and create a pleasant user experience for all mobile users.
Using mobile marketing strategy which focuses on search engine marketing will be important as mobile phone traffic grows.
Mobile users are usually doing a search while they are walking, sitting in a restaurant or coffee shop, or in the car.
Therefore, mobile websites need to be optimized to rapidly provide the exact information needed in search.
By following basic SEO principles for mobile search marketing, not only can a site be more easily found, but marketers will be able to determine which pages are being viewed the most, where they are being viewed, and the demographics of that consumer.
