Why Cut Lists and Material Lists Are Important
That's why it is always recommended by professionals to spend the extra money and get the plans for your project that have these two components included.
Those who don't think they are that important are most of the time the same people who don't understand what they are.
So let's take a few minutes and talk about what each of these are and what they aren't.
The materials list is a detailed list that includes everything you need to either purchase or gather, as in tools you will need to have, in order to conclude the building of the project.
If you need a foundation for a structure such as a garden shed, the materials list will not include what you need for the foundation unless you have a materials list for the type of foundation you would like to prepare or build.
This list might include gravel and/or sand along with wood and brackets or concrete peers.
Doing some research and knowing what it is you are building and all the other things you might need to consider is always a good idea before starting a project.
Make sure that each step in the process has its own material and cut lists so you know what you are getting yourself into.
These lists DO NOT include dealing with the local codes departments, HOA's (Home Owners Associations) or building permits you might need to get your project off the ground.
Basically a cut list shows the lengths of wood or other materials that need to be cut and the best way to cut them.
The materials list should include the best lengths to buy them in.
The reason for a cut list is to be able to purchase the minimum amount of materials and get the maximum use from them.
You may think this is only for the betterment of the project but there are several reasons having these lists in advance will help you and the environment.
The first is the fact that when using natural materials it is always best not to waste them.
Making a series of bad or wrong cuts simply is a waste, not to mention it is frustrating.
To make these cuts you will be using some type of energy.
The less you have to cut the less energy you use.
This makes paying a little more for materials and cut lists a very good decision for you the builder, for the environment and for your sanity.
