It makes sense to pack them first.

Store them separately from your other items.

Make sure your new home is up to par and ready for you to move into it.

Switch Your Utilities as soon as possible.
Learn about your new service providers for your electric, gas, phone, water, and sewage and get them all into your name.
You may have to give a minimal deposit ahead of time.
Most providers like at least one to at least three weeks in advance notice.
Cancel your existing service.
It is vital that you leave the utilities in your name until you close on your home or when the new owners are there.
This way you will be assured that you are only responsible for the services used by you and your family.

Switch Your Phone Service.
Do this in advance, maybe three weeks or so ahead of time.
Your provider will need a decent amount of time to run the lines to your new home.
Give the phone company a date when you want the service to be in your name.
Have a phone available and ready to test once your service is scheduled.
As with your utilities, you may be asked for a deposit.
While disconnecting your existing phone service, let them know at least three weeks in advance.

Switch your Cable / Dish / Internet Providers.
These providers require you are at the residence the day of the installation.
When a person is home, it ensures that the service is working within the outlets of your choice.
Cancel your existing service with these providers.
It's much easier with these because the company can simply disconnect your service without having to come to your home.
Let them know way in advance also -- possibly two to three weeks would be good.
7.

Schedule Mail Forwarding.
It is important to make sure that any and all your creditiors' mail reaches you in a timely manner.
Of course give them your new address as soon as possible! There is a form called "change of address" on the back of your bills.
I wouldn't trust that totally; however.
Some companies may ignore it.
Make sure your creditors are informed of your new address and phone number.
8.

Tell your family and friends your new contact information.
These people may probably know you are moving -- but they will need your new information.
Simply send them each a note or an email.
