- Locate a firewood supplier who carries oak and white pine logs. Purchase both a pine and oak log, around 6 inches wide by 9 inches long, and cut the logs to size as needed. Build the body of the jewelry box out of two 1/2-inch thick boards, which make up the front and back, and two 3/4-inch thick short boards, which make up the sides. Secure the box with wood nails. Use white pine for the bottom and lid. The lid and bottom are usually 1/2-inch to 5/8-inch thick. Attach the lid with wooden hinges. Stain the jewelry box to show off the natural beauty of the wood or paint to create a custom look and feel. The overall size of the box will be 6 inches wide by 4 inches deep by 9 inches long. Use green (freshly cut) logs for ease of cutting.
- Choose a pen blank of tropical wood, exotic hardwood or just basic oak, maple, cherry or walnut. Cut the pen blanks in to two sections. Drill a 7-millimeter hole through the center of both sections. Mount the pen blanks to a mini-lathe and begin carving the blanks. Use an oval skew chisel, a spindle gouge and a parting tool to carve the wooden pens to the desired shape and feel. Use different grades of sandpaper to smooth the surface to the desired feel. Polish the surface of the pen blanks with microcrystalline wax and stain to the desired color.
- Spray adhesive to 3/4-inch by 20-inch by 73-inch oak or maple plywood and apply the rocking horse pattern (see References). Use a jigsaw cut out one side of the rocking horse and repeat for the other side. Now cut the saddle, saddle back, ears, handles, tail and footrest. Sand all the pieces with a medium-grit sandpaper to smooth all the rough edges and the surface, then move to fine-grit sandpaper for the final sanding of all the pieces. Screw all the pieces together with wood screws to ensure additional strength. Paint the rocking horse to the desired color and set aside to dry.
