    • 1). Sand down any rough areas on your wooden trunk using the 400 grit sandpaper. The surface should be smooth before you paint, seal or add appliques to your treasure trove. Wipe the trunk's surface with a damp cloth to remove any loose dust and debris.

    • 2). Apply a layer of wood sealer to the outside of your trunk with a paint brush. Allow the coat to dry completely. This should be done outside or in a well-ventilated area. Paint the trunk if you want, and allow the paint to dry between coats. You may need at least two coats of paint.

    • 3). Cut out pictures from magazines or use your own pictures. Comic book pages can also be a nice way to personalize your treasure trove. Stickers and other small embellishments may also be used. Glue each of the pieces onto the trunk. A decoupage effect can be created by laying the pieces on the trunk with the edges overlapping, completely covering the trunk if desired. It's not necessary to fully cover the wood if you choose not to.

    • 4). Spread a layer of Mod Podge over the entire trunk, making sure to cover all the pictures, clippings and stickers you have applied. Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely before applying another coat. The Mod Podge acts as a sealer to preserve your decoupage designs.

    • 5). Glue on any 3-D art pieces you may have planned, such as wood lettering or shapes. Extra wooden letters and shapes should be painted and completely dry before adding them to your treasure trove. Allow the trunk to fully dry out for a few days before using it.
