How to Use a Microscope to Read a Recast Layer
- 1). Pick an EDM-created component on which to read the recast layer; the component you choose must be placed in an industrial microscope to get an accurate reading. Lockheed Martin is the company that creates the specifications for microscopes used to read recast layers created by EDMs.
- 2). Place the component on the tray of an industrial strength microscope. Turn on the computer monitor attached to the microscope and use the adjustment knobs to fine-tune the quality of the view of the component you have. The component should appear clear on the computer screen.
- 3). Read recast layers by looking for them on the component; each recast layer appears as a crack on the surface of the component. Each one is created by heat generated by the EDM machine. Each recast layer is different in appearance, size, depth and danger to the component.
