    • 1). Click the paintbrush icon from the tool palette to run the "Paintbrush" tool, and then drag on the canvas to draw an arrow that points either left or right.

    • 2). Drag the arrow to the "Symbol" panel. Type "Arrow" in the dialog box that Illustrator displays to prompt you for the name of the new symbol. Click "OK" to close the dialog.

    • 3). Click the tool palette icon shaped like a straight line segment to run the "Line" tool, and drag on the canvas to form a backward "C" shape that fills roughly one-sixteenth of the canvas. You'll make a cylinder from this shape.

    • 4). Drag the mouse around the backward "C" to select it, and then click the "Effects" menu's "Revolve" command, which will turn the backward "C" into a cylinder. Click the "Preview" check box in the dialog box that appears, then click the "Map art" button to display tools for mapping 2-D graphics like your arrow onto 3-D objects like a cylinder.

    • 5). Click repeatedly the ">" arrow to the right of the "Surface" control to view different faces of the cylinder. Stop clicking when the "Preview" pane shows the front, curved surface of the cylinder.

    • 6). Click the "Symbol" drop-down list, and then click the "Arrow" item you made earlier. Illustrator will display the arrow on the cylinder's front surface. Click "OK" to close the mapping dialog box, and then click "OK" to close the "Revolve" dialog box. Illustrator will display your 2-D arrow drawing curved in 3-D space. The arrow is not yet 3-D.

    • 7). Press "Control" and "C" simultaneously, and then press "Control" and "V" simultaneously to duplicate the curved arrow. Drag the duplicate so it is slightly to the left or right of the original arrow.

    • 8). Run the "Paintbrush" tool as described in Step 1, and then drag horizontal lines that connect the left and right extremes of both arrows with each other to complete the 3-D curved arrow.
