How to Cut a Glass Water Bottle

    • 1). Wash and dry the bottle thoroughly and make sure it has no cracks or chips. If it does, it may shatter when you try to cut it and cause injury. If not, draw a straight line around the bottle where you want to cut it using a permanent marker.

    • 2). Cut a piece of linen twine that will tie easily around your bottle. Moisten it with kerosene from a lighter or an Aladdin's lamp. Tie it around the bottle tightly where you drew your line.

    • 3). Prepare an ice bath. Fill a large bucket with ice water; make sure the bucket will accept the bottle and both arms. Put on your work gloves and eye protection.

    • 4). Light a match and touch it to the twine. The flame should travel around the twine and go out. Immediately plunge the bottle into the ice water and slap the bottle above the line. It should break off cleanly.

    • 5). Bevel the edges of the new cup or candle holder with a glass file to avoid injury during use.
