How to Identify a Boat Trailer
- 1). Look on the trailer for manufacturer's name. If the manufacturer's name is not on the trailer, locate the trailer's VIN, usually found on the side of the tongue or on the side rails of the trailer.
- 2). Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles of the state in which the trailer was last registered. Provide the VIN or the license tag number, if there is no VIN and ask for the identification data you desire.
- 3). Contact a private VIN resource with the VIN if the last state of registration is unknown. These are services that provide information on the history of automobiles, boats, personal watercraft and trailers -- any vehicle that requires registration. Not all of the resources are free; some charge a minimal fee.
- 4). Provide the last four digits of the trailer's serial number to the DMV of the last known state of registration or the private VIN resource, if you find a serial number but no VIN. Trailers built before 1980 often have a six-digit serial number, but no VIN; the 17-character VIN wasn't required by law. Most DMVs use this serial number in lieu of a VIN.
