An Auxiliary Outboard Motor Installation
- 1). Move the auxiliary outboard motor onto the transom of your boat, where the main motor is mounted, and 24 inches to the left of the main motor's mounting mounting holes. Mark the location of the auxiliary motor's mounting holes on the transom with a china marker.
- 2). Remove the auxiliary motor from the transom. Install a 1 1/8-inch bit in a drill. Drill all the way through the transom of the boat at the marked locations.
- 3). Mix the contents of a marine epoxy kit -- a two-part paste of resin and hardener -- in the proportions specified in the kit's instructions. When the epoxy begins to harden, usually after about 30 minutes, spread a thin layer of epoxy around the inside of the holes you drilled with a plastic putty knife.
- 4). Wipe any epoxy off the exterior surface of the transom with a clean cloth dipped in acetone. Allow the epoxy to cure fully, a process that may take 24 hours.
- 5). Move the auxiliary motor onto the transom. Line up its mounting holes with the auxiliary motor mounting holes in the transom.
- 6). Slide the auxiliary motor's 1-inch mounting bolts through 1-inch washers and push the bolts through the mounting holes from the outside of the boat. Place 1-inch lock washers on the bolts.
- 7). Thread the mounting nuts onto bolts. Tighten the nuts to 55 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.
