Formal School Hairstyles

An up-do always creates a sophisticated look. Opt for a tight bun or French twist with the hair slicked straight back or parted dramatically to the side. If you would like more texture and volume, style the hair in curls and sweep them up with bobby pins. If you have short hair, go for a polished, sleek style. Finish off the look with jeweled bobby pins or a simple tiara. - Loose curls left down in a romantic style.Jason Merritt/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images
Consider a more romantic hairstyle if you are wearing a slinky floor-length gown. Choose a loosely curled style, either left down or slightly elevated in a partial up-do. Those with shorter lengths can add texture with loose waves or a French braid headband across the part. Accessorize with an elegant flower, headband or other romantic accouterments. - An elegant style inspired by old Hollywood glam.Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images
If you're wearing a vintage style gown, take your hair back in time, too. Go for the old Hollywood glamour look with loose yet polished waves parted to one side. If you want your hair up, choose a high up-do much like Audrey Hepburn's in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" or a swept-up bouffant. Shorter hair can be styled into pin curls reminiscent of silver screen queen Marilyn Monroe. Looking for something a little more edgy but still formal? Style your hair into a spiky up-do or a loose bun at the nape of the neck. Allow a few tendrils of hair to remain down and loose. Crimp or braid some of your hair to create texture. Add chopsticks to your up-do for a fun twist.
