How to Change the O Ring on Moen Shower Fixtures
- 1). Turn off the main water supply valve, usually located where the main water line comes into the building. Turn the handle or lever on the shower fixture until it is pointing straight up, as this will relieve the water pressure still in the plumbing system.
- 2). Remove the decorative cap over the handle retaining or set screw by prying it off with a small flat blade screwdriver. Remove the retaining or set screw from the handle with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the handle straight off and place it aside. Pull the handle adapter, if equipped, straight off and place it aside.
- 3). Pull the temperature limiter, a circular device with a tab, straight off the faucet assembly. Pull out the key stop, into which the limiter was inserted, straight out. Pull the metal collar off the faucet cartridge straight out and place it aside.
- 4). Pull out the U-shaped retaining clip from the side of the cartridge with a pair of pliers. Place a Moen twist wrench onto the end of the cartridge. Twist the cartridge back and forth with the wrench between the 11 and 1 o’clock positions. Remove the wrench.
- 5). Place the jaws of a pair of pliers over the cartridge stem to which the handle was attached. Pull the cartridge straight out using the pliers.
- 6). Slip the three O-rings from the cartridge and discard them. Roll replacement O-rings onto the cartridge until they slip into the grooves where the original O-rings were seated.
- 7). Insert the cartridge back into the valve cavity in the faucet with the notch on the stem facing downwards. Ensure the protruding tabs on the cartridge are flush with the outer edges of the valve cavity. Push the U-shaped retaining clip back into the side of the cartridge until it is fully seated.
- 8). Install the metal collar, the key stop and the temperature limiter in the reverse order of removal. Ensure the tab in the limiter is facing straight up. Replace the handle adapter, the handle, the retaining or set screw and the decorative cap.
- 9). Turn the water supply back on and check the faucet for leaks.
