Angular cheilitis, also known as cheilosis, is an inflammatory fungal infection that results in a severe form of chapped lips with splits to the corners of the mouth. The tiny splits and cracks can harbour fungal bacteria that make the condition worse.

What are the Symptoms?
The main symptoms of Angular Cheilitis are splits in the skin at the corners of the mouth. This can often be mistaken for a cold sore. If not treated this condition develops into an unsightly crust or ulcer that becomes difficult to heal. The site of infection is often red, dry, cracking, itchy, sometimes bleeding and the mouth becomes painful to open as the corners keep splitting.
What Causes Angular Cheilitis?
Medical science does not have a definitive cause for this condition. The condition usually starts with a split to the corner of the mouth. Infection often occurs when excess saliva has built up around the corners of the mouth promoting the growth of a fungal infection. Lip balms and creams should be avoided as the moisture can serve to spread the bacteria.
Various medical studies have shown that angular cheilitis may also be influenced by nutritional deficiencies, especially iron and zinc. Individuals with a poor diet or who suffer from malnutrition are more likely to suffer from the condition. Iron and zinc supplements can be taken to help build the immune system to prevent a recurrence in the future.

Angular Cheilitis Cure
The best thing to do with any medical condition is to take action immediately. If a problem is left untreated it may become much worse. A visit to the doctor will commonly result in a prescription for a topical antifungal or steroid. In many cases, especially where the angular cheilitis is not too severe, the pharmaceutical is sufficient to clear up the problem.
A supplement for the B group vitamins including vitamin B1 and vitamin B12 is useful to build the immune system to fight off infection from this condition.
However, this condition can be challenging to heal because you have to open your mouth to eat and when you do the corners split again. To treat this effectively, the patient needs to keep their mouth closed and the skin dry, which is often difficult to achieve. Also in more advanced cases, the medication doesn't work very well leading to a chronic case of angular cheilitis.

Angular Cheilitis Home Remedy
Thankfully there is a home remedy available that cures the root cause of the condition relieving the symptoms fast and preventing it from returning in the future.
The overnight treatment has been proven to be effective in treating all stages of the condition by quickly removing the source of nutrition for any fungi and bacteria allowing your immune system to fight the infection and heal the split skin. By morning, the symptoms of angular cheilitis are relieved. Full recovery normally takes about one week.
