Home Remedy: Plant Insecticide
- Mix an all purpose fungicide/insecticide spray by combining 3 tablespoons of baking soda, 2 tablespoons of liquid Ivory soap, 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and a gallon of water. The liquid soap and oil will act as an insecticide, while baking soda is a natural fungicide.
Spray using a spray bottle on the top and bottom of plant leaves once a week. Baking soda is recommended to fight off any diseases insects may carry to the plant. You can leave baking soda out, combining only oil and liquid soap with water. - Steep 1/2 cup hot peppers such as habanero or chilli and 1/2 cup garlic cloves in 2 cups water for 24 hours. You can do this easily in a glass jar. Combine all ingredients and close the lid tightly. Leave the glass jar in a sunny spot. Strain and spray using a spray bottle onto plant foliage.
- A salt spray solution works well for household plants and to fight off spider mites which feed off of indoor plants. Add 2 tablespoons of salt to 1 gallon of water and spray household plants once a week.
- Alcohol spray works well for protecting household plants and herbs from insects. Mix 1 cup of 70 percent isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) with a quart of water. Spray on a test leaf as some plant leaves are sensitive and can burn. Wait a day and if no adverse action is seen, spray on the rest of the plant leaves.
