Allergies in Pug Dogs
- Pugs have shorter snouts that can lead to a variety of breathing issues, including wheezing and coughing. Pugs more susceptible to outside pollen, ragweed and seasonal allergies.
- Pugs can sometimes be allergic to their food. Vomiting and diarrhea can be signs of food intolerance. Switching dog foods can often determine if this is the problem.
- Most Pugs are allergic to fleas. Fleas can cause a severe skin reaction after biting a Pug. Pugs should be on a flea regiment and kept in a flea-controlled environment.
- Mange is the loss of hair on an animal. Demodectic mange is cause by demodex mites, which some Pugs are allergic to. Signs are patchy hair loss without itching. Demodectic mange is usually seen in Pugs less than a year old. It usually appears near the eyes, lips, legs and back.
- Pugs can suffer from dry, itchy skin, usually caused by sensitivity to detergents, dog shampoos and other environmental factors.
- All health problems should be reported to a vet for proper care and treatment.
