How to Repair a Cabinet Door Hinge
- 1). Open and close the cabinet door to determine what is happening with the door and hinge. Check if the door is out of alignment or if the hinge is broken.
- 2). Look at the type of hinge that is being used on the cabinet. A concealed European hinge will have a round hole that the hinge will be set in. It will also have a second half that attaches to the face frame of the cabinet. The face frame is the flat portion of the cabinet that the doors and drawers rest against. These type of hinges have the ability to adjust in either two or three ways. Turn the adjustment screws to move the cabinet door a little at a time, and see if you can adjust it so that it fits correctly. If the hinge will not adjust, remove the existing screws, and replace the hinge with a new one.
- 3). If the hinge of of the decorative variety, it will be drilled directly to the face frame and onto the flat part of the back side of the door. Decorative hinges can be found on older cabinets and can only be replaced, because these hinges have no adjustments. Remove the old screws, and replace the hinge with a new one using the existing holes and new screws. If a hole is stripped out, place the next size larger in the stripped hole. Do not use longer screws, as they can go through the surface of the door.
- 4). Look to see if it is a finial tipped hinge, which is similar to a decorative hinge. It has to be removed and replaced, as described in the last step.
