What Are Festivals Celebrated By Christians

The most significant and joyous of all Christian festivals is the Christmas which is the birth of Jesus Christ. But, just like all other religions communities of the world, Christians too have many other festivals that are celebrated throughout the year.

CHRISTMAS- It is celebrated on 25th December, the birthday of Jesus Christ. It is a very traditional festival and very widely celebrated among the Christians. Many rituals are involved in this festival like decorating churches, homes and streets with Christmas trees, candles, garlands. The celebrations of this festival involve people singing carols, exchanging gifts and greeting cards, eating traditional food, remembering Jesus Christ and his teachings, praying to God for his blessings etc.

ADVENT- It is the first day of the Christian calendar year.

EPIPHANY- The twelfth day of Christmas. The visit of the Magi or wise men are celebrated.
SHROVE TUESDAY- It is the last day before Lent starts. On this day Christians eat those things which are prohibited to be eaten throughout the Lent period.

ASH WEDNESDAY- It is the beginning of Lent.

LENT- The forty days, except the Sundays, before the Easter starts, is called Lent. The Sundays are not counted because those are holidays. According to the Christian religion, it is said that Lent is celebrated in remembrance of Jesus who once had to stay in a desert without food. It is also considered as the beginning of longer days with the arrival of spring.

PALM SUNDAY- It is the last Sunday OF Lent and before the Easter. It is celebrated as the day when Jesus reached Jerusalem.

MOTHERING SUNDAY- This is celebrated in the same way as mothers day is celebrated in other countries. Children give gifts and cards to their mothers to show respect and love for them. It comes on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

EASTER- Easter is one of the most significant of all Christian festivals. It celebrates the event of the Resurrection of Jeasus Christ when he rose from death, three days after he was crucified. It has a lot of significance for them and symbolizes their utter faith towards Jesus Christ.

HOLY THURSDAY- The occasion for this Christian festival is Jesuss last supper and incident of Judass betrayal.

GOOD FRIDAY- This is also considered to be very pure and holy day according to Christians. It is a national holiday in some non-Christian countries too. The day is considered to be the day when Jesus was arrested and killed.

EASTER SUNDAY- Christians believe that Jesus is immortal and he came back to life after death. This is celebrated on Easter Sunday. There is a tradition of gifting painted eggs on this day. In present times chocolate eggs are gifted to people on this day. Cards are also given.
Special dishes or food for this festival are roast lamb, boiled eggs, easter biscuits, simmel cake, custard etc.

Pentecost etc. are some other Christian festivals celebrated by the people.
