Bed bugs are one of the worst kinds of pest to have in your home.
They can gain access to your home in a variety of ways that include hitchhiking on clothes of your family or guests, in your pet's fur, on your luggage, and even on furniture that you purchase from second hand stores.
When you see one critter, you should already know that there are hundreds more hiding where you can't see them.
In fact, when you see one pest, you already have an infestation on your hands.
The best thing you can do is to take some precautions to get rid of your unwanted houseguests before the infestation gets too out of hand.
It is important not to get bent out of shape if you find that your home has bed bugs.
Many perfectly clean homes have infestations several times a year, and this is due to the pests' mode of transmission.
You can get bed bugs from virtually anyone, and they may not even be aware they have them.
One important fact you need to be aware of is that bed bugs can remain in your home as long as there is a food source.
Since the food source for this type of pest is blood, unless your home is empty of life, you'll need to find another way to get rid of them.
If you want to get rid of them yourself, you should know you have your work cut out for you.
It can be very troublesome finding where their hiding spots are.
Many common places that they tend to hide in your home are inside of furniture, on the curtains, in the baseboards, and even inside the cracks of your floors.
When the light goes out at night and everyone is asleep, the CO2 and warmth of your body draw them out of hiding to feed.
One product that is safe and natural for you to use if you want to get rid of them on your own is diatomaceous earth, a powder made from crumbled sedimentary rock.
This product is an effective pest control substance.
You can purchase it from home improvement stores.
Make sure you get the food grade kind to protect your kids and pets if it is accidentally ingested.
Sprinkle it in between your mattress and box springs; place it along your baseboards and in other area where you suspect the bed bugs may be hiding.
Apply petroleum jelly to the legs of your bed frame to make it harder for the critters to gain access to you while you are sleeping.
Wash all of your clothing, bedding, and linen in hot water.
Have your carpet and furniture steam cleaned.
It may be necessary to repeat these steps several times to ensure that the infestation is gone.
Of course if all else fails, you can always hire a pest control company who can get rid of the infestation in no time.
