The preparation for the Chinese New Year celebration may actually take much longer.  As much as possible people would try to pay all their financial obligations in order to start the New Year with a clean slate. Aside from cleaning the financial responsibilities; people would also need to prepare their houses for the coming new year.

It is a must that the house is clean from all clutter; these would help clear away the bad luck that happened in the past year. During this time minor or major renovations are done in the house to make sure that everything is all set for the coming new year.

Food are prepared for the family dinner; the Chinese New Year is one of the most important family gatherings. Some families would prepare dinner at home while others would opt to go to a restaurant to celebrate. The most common food that you will see during this event sweets, candies, chocolates, mandarin oranges and sticky rice cakes.

On the dinner table you would see family members wearing the traditional Chinese dresses for girls called Cheongsam and the male family members would wear Qiapao on the event. It is  a very festive event and adult family members would give out red Lai-See envelopes as sign of good fortune and prosperity.

Another part of the Chinese New Year celebration preparation is the decorating of homes and business establishments. Chinese lanterns are placed to create a more festive atmosphere. Some of the decorations would also include red paper cut outs, prosperous orange trees and Spring festival couplets make up the decoration of a Chinese home to celebrate the new year.

You would also need to prepare yourself in the coming new year. It is important to buy new clothes to wear for the event or get a new hairstyle. You need to reinvent yourself to attract more luck into your life.
