Can an Unbalanced Diet Cause Your Parrot to Be Bored?

As with caring for other kinds of animals, Parrot care involves adequate nutrition.
Importance not only rests on what you feed it, but how and when you give it food.
On Polly's first day in your home, you might worry that he's not touching his food.
This just might be a normal reaction to a change in environment and feeding him something more irresistible like a cracker with honey or fresh fruit will most likely get him munching away.
Remember though that an eating regimen full of treats does not make a proper Parrot diet and your valuable bird will need to get his nutrition from other than what he likes best.
The number one cause of parrot mortality is malnutrition and it would be in your best interest to avoid this.
Actually, there is still some debate as to what the ideal diet is for parrots, mixing-up various seeds, fresh fruit and nutritious pellets would be a good idea.
Using just seeds or pellets as a constant food source will result in an unbalanced diet and might even cause your pet to get bored with its food and develop behavioral problems.
The parrot diet is actually divided into two kinds: dry food and wet food.
Dry food consists of seed mixture, hulled oats and pellets with some walnuts or almonds on occasion.
Wet food is fresh fruit and veggies- apples, cantaloupe, carrots, etc.
Most parrots favor the latter more.
As mentioned earlier however, it's not always a good idea to give them what they like best.
The key to a well balanced parrot diet is variety and making sure they don't get too much of one type of food.
Scheduling the time of day your parrot eats is also a good way to improve his food intake.
Parrots in the wild are foragers, meaning they go around the trees and forest floor looking for food at specific times of the day.
The best times to feed your pet is at sunrise and just after sunset when he's about to turn in for the night.
This foraging time is in their natural body clock and when his meals are served at these times, it will be natural for him to feed.
