Selecting the right food for your greyhound isn't always easy.
Supermarkets are stacked full of standard dog food but a nutritionally balanced greyhound food can be tricky to find.
However, before you reach for the cheapest dog food on the shelf you should be aware that your greyhound has very different nutritional requirements than that of other dogs.
They need a quality diet that suits their specific needs.
Greyhound owners all certainly love their dogs, but you will find many who argue about what food is best for this particular breed.
Ultimately it is up to you to decide what is best for your dog, but by doing a little research you will begin to understand the types of food your greyhound needs in his diet.
Ideally, your greyhound should be eating certain level of protein in each meal.
A good quality dog food for adult dogs will typically contain around 20% protein.
However, this is too high for a greyhound as they need around 17% protein.
The fat level should be around 8% with around 3% fibre.
By feeding a nutritious, balanced diet your greyhound should have good energy levels and a glossy coat and bright eyes.
If you have an active racing greyhound then you will need to search out a food with higher levels of protein.
This is because an athletic, active greyhound will exhaust huge amounts of energy.
They can need as much as 30% protein in their food.
Whether your greyhound is retired or active he will need regular exercise to keep him in good shape.
Remember in winter that a greyhound can benefit from a padded cotton jacket to keep him warm and his body temperature at a steady level.
