How to Connect a Shallow Well Pump

    • 1). Turn off power to the pump site by shutting off the pump breaker in the main power panel. Locate where the pump will sit in relation to the water tank and the well pipe -- which runs underground to the well. Locate the inlet pipe connection on the water tank. Point the outlet of the water pump toward the tank inlet.

    • 2). Screw a short piece of pipe onto the pump outlet. Be sure to add some sealant to the pipe threads to ensure a tight seal. Screw the one-way pipe onto the end of the short piece of pipe you just added to the pump. The arrow on the one-way pipe should point toward the water tank.

    • 3). Add sealant to all threaded pipe fittings. Place a final section of pipe from the one-way valve outlet to the water tank inlet pipe. At the pump inlet, add a section of pipe to connect the pump inlet to the well pipe. Make sure all pipe connections are sealed and dry before starting the pump.

    • 4). Locate the black, white and ground wires of the pump. Connect the black, white and ground wires of the pump to the black, white and ground wires of the junction box -- which supplies the pump with power. Use the wire strippers and wire cutters to strip 1/2 inch of insulation off the end of each wire, if needed, to connect the pump to the wires in the junction box.
