How to Care for Oily Skin That Is Sensitive
- 1). Wash your skin twice daily with a soap-free cleanser or cream cleanser. Both types of facial cleaners are designed with a lower pH level than soap has, thus leading to less irritation than soap. Also refrain from using highly deodorized cleansers since they may cause an allergic type of dermatitis and possibly lead to heavy breakouts.
- 2). Occupy your hands when bored, watching television or working at your desk. Fidgeting with your face can transfer oils from another surface onto your skin. Oils from foods, another person's belongings and lotions may add to the oil already prevalent on your skin. Adding foreign oils that the skin is not naturally used to may cause redness and immediate breakouts.
- 3). Apply makeup products that are water-based only. Oil-based products will add to the already high level of oil on the skin. Wash away any makeup before going to bed as well. Leaving on makeup for long periods of time will prevent the skin from breathing properly and cause further sensitivity.
- 4). Exfoliate your face at least once a week to remove dead skin cells that are not shed properly due to excessive oil. Use an exfoliating pad (hand-held scrubbing pad that has grooves or various layers to brush away dead skin cells) with warm water. Cover the pad in a soap-free, fragrance-free cleanser and rub to create a lather. Scrub the face and other problematic skin areas gently in a circular motion. Rinse with warm water to remove the dirt loosened by scrubbing.
- 5). Consult a dermatologist for skin that is overly sensitive and you are unable to clear or reduce redness after trying the above mentioned options. Skin that is still showing signs of sensitivity (redness, dryness, oiliness or itching) might be related to a condition of the skin, like eczema or rosacea. Skin conditions are best treated with a medicated, topical prescription cream that can treat the root cause rather than only the skin surface.
