Turning Buildings Into A Home
It takes a lot of work to make your house a home.
The most popular way to do that today is by making an old school house, barn, or church into a livable home.
The cost of restoring and modernizing a building like that is not as costly as you would imagine.
It's using the right material in the right places.
Nobody wants an old abandoned building on their property that will eventually just fall in and become an eyesore.
If you buy land that has one of these buildings on it, consider turning it into a home.
It may take some extra work but in the end, the home you live in at one time held together a classroom where students learned, played, and grew up.
It might have been an old barn that housed several animals during a blizzard or a church that welcomed an entire community during a rough winter when they wouldn't have any place to go otherwise.
For whatever reason that building was originally built, now it has a new purpose.
These older buildings were constructed out of the best materials back then.
Logs were cut to fit within one another in order to make the building.
Logs were strong enough to hold back the roughest winds, the most severe storms and the heat of the hot sun beating down in the summer.
Logs were durable and chosen to be the perfect fit.
Not every log was accepted but the ones that were chosen could withstand anything, and have.
That is why most of them stand today.
They may not have windows in them any longer but the frame is practically indestructible.
When remodeling one of these buildings, you can redesign it any way you wish.
Most of the buildings do not have a bathroom, living room or bedroom in them.
You can personalize the home by adding all of these where you choose.
The interior walls will need to be insulated and electricity will probably need to be established and run into the home.
When you remodel the home, you can use the rafters that are already in the building to create a rustic look or you can choose to hide them away.
You can add walls to separate rooms or leave it wide open.
Include a staircase that will go up to the top overlooking the open downstairs.
You can keep the building as old fashioned as you choose which is what most people decide to do.
To do this you need to keep it open inside and to keep some of the fixtures that were already there, such as the well pump that was used to draw water from the well.
You can add modern plumbing to your building but the pump would be a great fixture to have.
Set lanterns in the windows creating a soft glow at night, especially after a new fallen snow.
It looks peaceful and content.
Making a old building new again is a great way to also save on our natural resources by using what you can.
