Products for Bathroom Wall & Shower Mold
- In the cleaning aisle of most any store are dozens of products that claim to be the best at killing and removing mold from bathroom surfaces. Each product probably has similar results, making the choice all the more difficult. How the products work may make the difference in what product to choose. Some are quick and easy but use harsh chemicals, while other products are more environmentally friendly.
- Many well-known companies have been making bathroom cleaners that are designed to kill and remove mold for decades. These are products that are formulated to remove, kill and/or prevent mold growth in bathrooms quickly and with little effort. Tilex, Lysol and Scrubbing Bubbles are some of the commonly known brands that make mold cleaners for the bathroom. Tilex's Mold and Mildew cleaner uses a mix of detergent and bleach to remove the color of and kill the mold. Lysol Mildew Remover also contains bleach and kills mold. Both of these products contain warnings about the noxious fumes that are produced when used. Both products state on the label that "if the vapors bother you, leave the room." Another common brand, Scrubbing Bubbles, makes the Automatic Shower Cleaner. The Automatic Shower Cleaner is placed in the shower and with the push of a button once a day, the device sprays a cleaner that cleans for you, no scrubbing or rinsing needed. This shower cleaner has a "clean, fresh scent" and a "formula (that) is less harsh than other shower cleaners."
- Consumer demand and interest has lead to the development of more natural, less toxic environmentally friendly bathroom cleaners to come onto the market. These products are now as easy to find as the traditional shower cleaners. Method and Seventh Generation brand cleaners can be found in many local retail stores. Method makes Tub n' Tile Bathroom Cleaner, which kills mold and is biodegradable. Seventh Generation makes Natural Shower Cleaner, which uses a formula made of hydrogen peroxide and plant-based ingredients to clean and remove mold in the bathroom. Another, less known product that can be found at online retailers is Safe Shield. This product claims to kill the mold on contact at the DNA level and at the same time apply a shield to prevent future mold growth.
- There are also several homemade recipes for cleaning and killing mold in the bathroom. One involves mixing 1 cup of bleach into 1 gallon of water to scrub the surface with. Vinegar can also be used full strength, or mixed with water in equal parts to scrub the area. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends a solution of detergent and water be used to scrub away mold.
