    Mnemonics

    • Mnemonic is another word for memory tool, according to the Mind Tools website. Mnemonics means using imagery and word association techniques to jog your memory. Someone who finds it hard to remember that the word duvet ends with the letter "t" could, for example, could think of another word beginning with t, such as toasty, that he can associate with a warm, cozy duvet. If you find it hard to remember that the letter "s" is repeated in the word dessert, think of an associative phrase like "simply scrumptious."

    Grouping Words Together

    • Grouping words with similar spelling patterns together makes it easier to memorize them. The word adventure, for example, could be grouped with words like aperture, nature, culture and tincture. Write each word in the group down several times and try pronouncing each one out loud, along with its definition. Additionally, the word group can be broken into syllable groups. Firstly, memorize two syllable words such as nature and culture before tackling adventure and aperture, which have three syllables.

    Creative Examples

    • People who have difficulty spelling certain words could try thinking of different phrases that use the word in its correct context. This encourages children, in particular, to think creatively about words' meanings as well as their spelling. Write the phrases down on paper or compose a story that contains at least three examples of the difficult-to-spell word.

    The Rules

    • Remembering rules such as "i before e, except after c" helps save time and effort. It's easier, for example, to remember the pluralized spellings of words if you first memorize the rules that apply to particular nouns. Those that end in a consonant plus the letter "y" always end in "es" when pluralized. Cherry and cherries is one example. You could also make a list of nouns ending in the letter "o" that always end in the letters "es" in the plural, such as hero, echo, domino and buffalo.

    Confusing Words

    • Words can be confusing if they sound the same but have different spellings and meanings. Their and there is a common example. Memorizing the words' different meanings, then using each word in its correct context in a sentence, helps you to distinguish between them.
