How to Wear Metallic Lipstick

Do you love the metallic lipstick trend, but aren't sure you can pull it off?  Here are some tips to get you started:

For subtle shimmer
  • Use a sheer or shimmery lipstick or lip-gloss.
  • Apply a metallic gloss over lipstick.

Need a little more?
  • You can experiment with the trend by first applying regular lipstick and then dab a metallic eye shadow onto the center of the lips and blend outwards for just a touch of shimmer.

  • Mix a little glitter with petroleum jelly or a clear lip gloss and apply alone or over lipstick.
  • Using fine glitter, put a couple of drops of clear liquid lipstick base or lip gloss into the lid of the glitter container. Wet the tip of the lip brush with the liquid to just dampen it enough for the glitter to stick and then press the brush into the glitter.  Tap off the excess.  Press onto lips starting at the center and working outwards.  Repeat as needed for desired effect.

Rodarte: Heavy Metal

Lips had a glittery look for the Rodarte A/W Fall 2014 show. NARS Cosmetics lead makeup artist James Kaliardos used a small makeup brush to dab a custom blend of loose glitter (in a color that flattered each model's skin tone) over NARS new Audacious Lipstick (in this case NARS Dominique Audacious Lipstick, a pink lilac shade).

For a subtler metallic look, that is still bold, mix glitter (which you can get from a craft store) with a lip-gloss.  For the Rodarte A/W 2014 show, lips were lined with Mambo eyeliner (a reddish brown shade) and then filled in with NARS Rouge Tribal, a metallic burgundy shade, which was mixed with a custom blend of rose and gold loose glitter to create a glittery effect.

Rihanna's Emerald Green Lips

Rihanna looked fierce with emerald green lips and bantu knots when she attended the 2014 I Heart Radio Music Awards in Los Angeles.  RiRi has a new Viva Glam Rihanna 2 Lipstick ($16) and Tinted Lip Gloss ($15 from M.A.C. Cosmetics) described as a "cool mauve," as well as Viva Glam Rihanna 1, the original blue-red shade with frost finish. Both shades contain subtle gold sparkle.

Sometimes dark metallic lipsticks don’t go on quite as bold as they look in the tube, which, depending on the individual could be a good or a bad thing.  For more bold lip color, eye shadow and even eye liner is often used for color that pops.

A bold emerald green lip was the signature makeup look at the Korto Momolu Fall/Winter 2014 NY Fashion Week runway show.  Celebrity makeup artist Jackie Gomez, who has worked on Beyonce and Zoe Saldana, created the makeup look for the Korto’s Urban Coup collection using products from SheaMoisture’s "A Better Way to Beautiful" Cosmetics Collection.

Gomez used SheaMoisture Black Eye Liner ($8.99) to softly line the shape of the lips, lightly filling them in.  She then used SheaMoisture Wet/Dry Eye Shadow ($4.99) in Elsa, a vibrant emerald green shade, which was applied with a clear gloss.

SheaMoisture Cosmetics can be found at Target and Target.com.
