HARNESSING THE POWER OF SILENCE
Abraham Lincoln once said that, 'It is better to keep one's mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and resolve all doubt'. We live in a world that is rapidly becoming noisy with everyone trying to say something but no one is listening to the other person. In the hustle and bustle of the our everyday life we have neglected a particular source of power leaving it dormant, the power of silence. Brian Koslow made a profound statement in his book, 365 Ways To Become A Millionaire Without Being Born One, 'When you rearrange the word LISTEN what you have is 'SILENT'. That's right people only few of us on planet earth are tapping into the power of being in the still and are yielding big dividends from their investment. I read a poem and it goes thus
'A wise old owl sat on an oak
The more he heard the less he spoke
The less he spoke the more he heard
Why are we not all like this wise old bird?'
Silence is not actually an excuse for the weak instead it it is a weapon of the wise and the strong. While maintaining an attitude of silence, you stand to gain a lot because the impression people will have of you is that of a wise person for one thing about the wise is they say less and listen more. I read a book sometime back which said that talking too much makes one appear common and foolish but by saying less one is looked as a god. I am in a particular habit of allowing others ask the foolish questions while I gain from the answers. For one to stand out in the world today, one must harness the dormant power of silence which is just waiting to used. Thomas Edison, lost the use of his ears as a little boy when he was pulled up on to a train but when asked how it felt he simply described it as a blessing in disguise as it has helped him shut out rubbish talk and helped him to hear from within. No wonder he was one of the greatest inventors the world has ever produced. Dr Mike Murdock said 'Silence can never be misquoted'. I once said humorously to a loved one that I would rather spend a night in the cemtery for a million dollars than spend a day in the hairdressing salon for the same amount of money. Nothing useful ever came out from too much flapping of the gums. I read a story of Archimedes, the Greek mathematician who sat quietly in his bath meditating when suddenly he jumped out of the bath running through the streets with only a towel around his waist shouting 'Eureka Eureka' meaning I have found it. He had discovered the theory of displacement. Try this exercise of going into the still in a quiet place for five minutes a day and then increase it and watch the wonders it will perform in your life. A woman in Africa sought the help of a native doctor to help save her marriage which was heading for the rocks. He gave her a gourd of water which she should put in her mouth anytime her mother-in-law was on the war path. After some days of doing as the native doctor instructed, she began to see changes in her mother-in-law who now became nice to her. When she returned to thank him for what he gave her, he laughed and told her that there was nothing spectacular about the water but the whole miracle lay in her silence. I leave you with these words of wisdom, 'A shut mouth gathers no foot'.
