"This is just too difficult; I'll never finish on time.
" "Why does this always happen to me!?" "What am I going to tell my boss?" That is an example of a negative thought chain, those trains of thought that lead to nowhere except the bottomless pit of self-pity and misery.
Once they start, it's difficult to bring them to an end because they are like a roller coaster, they gather speed and momentum as they go and before you know it, you are hurtling into a frightening situation.
The key, then, is to stop them from gathering momentum.
Stop them dead in their tracks, long before they reach their destination.
Imagine putting an obstacle at the very beginning of a roller coaster ride, it would move perhaps a few inches and then stop dead, unable to continue.
The same can be done to stop negative thought chains, and if one wishes to be a successful and happy person, these thought chains must be stopped at the beginning.
"Your circumstances may be uncongenial, but they shall not remain so, if you will only perceive an ideal and strive to reach it.
You cannot travel within and stand still without.
Let a person radically alter his thoughts, and he will be astonished at the rapid transformation it will effect in the material conditions of his life.
" - James Allen Thought Stopping Thought stopping is a technique you can use to halt these negative thought chains before they gather any momentum.
1.
Find a quiet, comfortable place.
Sit, close your eyes and relax your body by breathing slowly, deeply and evenly.
Contract your muscles and then release them, starting with the feet and ending with your shoulders.
This helps release tension.
2.
Once you are relaxed, bring forth the negative thought into your awareness and repeat it over and over.
After each repetition of the thought, say out loud, "stop" or "be gone".
3.
Once the thought has been stopped, the next step is to replace it with a positive one.
For example, if your negative thought is; "I'll never finish this project, it's too difficult," change it to, "I can finish this project before the deadline.
" 4.
Once you become adept at using this technique, you can use a shorter form of it in situations like business meetings or awkward moments when there are a number of people around.
Obviously, talking out loud to yourself would be inappropriate so you could visualize a read stop sign in your mind instead.
It may take you a while before you are able to gain control over the negative thoughts that roam your mind, but I promise you, once you do, you'll find that doors of opportunity appear in all directions.
Practice this technique until it becomes second nature to you, then stand back and watch your life change for the better.
