How to Mend Broken Copper Pipe
- 1). Turn off the main water supply to the house. The main shutoff for most homes is typically in the ground near the sidewalk or street.
- 2). Put on heavy work gloves then slide the circular opening in a pipe cutter over the end of the broken copper pipe 1/4-inch or to the point where there is clean, unbroken pipe. Hold the device still with one hand and rotate the cutter around the pipe until it cuts it off.
- 3). Repeat the cutting process on the other end of the broken copper pipe to clean it up.
- 4). Unscrew the two nuts from the end of a compression fitting by turning them counterclockwise. Locate the small copper circles inside each nut so you don't lose them.
- 5). Insert one of the nuts from the fitting over one end of the pipe then insert the copper ring inside the nut. Insert the other nut and copper ring onto the other end of the broken pipe in the same sequence.
- 6). Position the center portion of the compression fitting in between the two pipes. Slide the copper ring and the nut from one pipe down to the fitting and turn the nut clockwise to secure it to the threads on the center portion.
- 7). Slide the nut and copper ring onto the other end of the pipe toward the center fitting and turn it clockwise until it is tight.
- 8). Turn each nut an additional turn with a wrench to ensure a water-tight seal in the copper pipe.
